There are carved three or four lines on the Japanese axe.
It improves to facilitate cutting for wood, because it's to prevent vacuum and to prevent mixing with the pitch.

Also it means mountain worship in Japan.
The three lines are amulet and the mountain god.
The Four lines are earth, water, wind and moon. And an offering as Sake and grains to the mountain god too.
